SEA Digital Week 2021 | How does Singapore’s Data Center Market Impact The Larger Economy?

26 Feb 2021

Data Centres Are Integral To Overall Economic Development and Strategy

Hosted by W Media, SEA Digital Week 2021 brought together thousands of IT leaders from across Southeast Asia to shed insight on topics covering from data center deployment to digital banking.

Mr Patrick McCreery, Head of Commercial at Keppel Data Centres spoke on the panel of SEA Digital Week 2021 on the topic of: How does Singapore’s Data Center Market impact the larger economy? The panel discussion explored some of the largest impacts the data centre industry has on Singapore’s economy, how Singapore’s smart city aspiration will drive demand for data centres and highlighted some of the short and long-term challenges faced by Singapore which inadvertently impacts the data centre industry.

Singapore has a unique positioning in Southeast Asia as the leading data centre market due to its high quality, high availability, secure data centre infrastructure. The rise in businesses and industries in recent years such as Telecommunications, Subsea Cables, AI (Artificial Intelligence) and the positioning of Singapore as a software development hub have directly influenced the demand for data centres within the digital economy.

One of the largest impacts of the data centre industry on Singapore's already bustling economy, Patrick points out, is the added capability to develop next-generation technologies. Singapore is a well-known hub with easy access to pools of niche talent to solve highly advanced problems. By tapping on the thriving digital eco-system and infrastructure of the region, AI (artificial intelligence), 5G and IOT (Internet of Things) can be quickly developed, protected, localised and distributed across markets in the region.

The panel concluded that the future of the data centre industry in Singapore as well as for the rest of the world - will be solving the problems of the future. To ensure that economic growth and development continues, data centres will have to be sustainable, built for the future, energy efficient and actively partnering with energy providers to integrate green renewable energy into their business operations.
